Spring 2008
OST 521 - Hematopoietic System is an intensive integrated course designed to provide the basic science and clinical medicine framework for understanding the hematopoietic system. Within this course we will also discuss HIV infection, both pathophysiology and clinical presentation, as well as, updated areas of oncology related to primary care.
Goals and Objectives
Goals:
Upon completion of OST 521, Hematopoietic System, the student should:
- understand the basic physiology of the normal hematopoietic system
- understand and be able to evaluate someone with a red cell, white cell, platelet or coagulation abnormality
- recognize when and how to use various blood products
- be familiar with the use of tumor markers in the management of oncology
- be able to recognize and treat oncologic emergencies
- be updated in new areas in hematology and oncology
Objectives:
The objectives for each lecture are presented with lecture outlines.

Course Structure
The course will be divided into four (4) segments:
- Red cell disorders
- White cell disorders
- Coagulation and platelet disorders
- Other
Examinations
Two examinations will be given in OST 521.
- The first examination will cover hemostasis disorders, anemia, and red and white cell disorders and will:
- be multiple choice.
- be on Thursday, January 17, from 8:00-9:50 a.m. (E105/E202 Fee)
- The second examination will cover cancer and blood disorders and will:
- not be cumulative over the first part.
- be multiple choice.
- be on Thursday, February 7, from 8:00-9:50 a.m. (E105/E202)
- Examinations will be weighted based on the number of questions per exam.
- Both examinations will cover predominantly lecture material, handouts, lab case evaluation and assigned readings.
- Students are expected to be in the classroom at the announced starting time of the exam.
- Students who miss an examination with an excused absence will be evaluated on the pertinent course material by the course coordinator and (or) course faculty. The format of the make up examination will be at the prerogative of the course coordinator. Without an excused absence, the student will receive a zero for the examination in question.
- Examination one make up TBA
- Examination two make up TBA
Conduct of Exams
- All exams are "closed book". Therefore, you should refrain from bringing books, notebooks, backpacks, etc. to exam sessions. Please store these items in your locker or leave them at the perimeter of the exam room.
- Individual multiple choice exam results will be sent to you by e-mail.
- Calculators and handheld computers are not to be used during exams in this course.
- In deference to your peers, if you carry a cell-phone, please be sure that it is turned off during the exam. If an emergency requires otherwise, please notify the course coordinator or course assistant.
- Students arriving late for exams (up to 30 minutes) will be admitted only if no other student has finished the exam and/or departed from the exam room.
Missed Examinations
In the spirit of professional behavior, MSUCOM students are expected to take examinations during their originally scheduled times. Please note that make-up dates have not been predetermined for this semester. All those who have excused exam absences will take make-up exams on dates to be determined. The make-up examination may differ in format from the regularly scheduled examination. If the make-up exam is also missed for any reason, the course coordinator may require you to repeat the course.
To obtain an excused absence, you need to make the following contact, as appropriate, prior to the scheduled administration of the examinations. http://www.com.msu.edu/ss/absences.html
Emergencies:
William M. Falls, Ph.D., Associate Dean for Student Services, at 353-8799, 353-7741 or e-mail falls@msu.edu, (e.g., death in family, serious illness (acute), hospitalization, automobile difficulties). If Dr. Falls is unable to answer your telephone call, please leave a message on voice mail.
When there is advance notice of absence:
Contact William M. Falls, Ph.D., Associate Dean for Student Services at C-108 East Fee Hall, (e.g., extended illness with doctor’s excuse, jury duty). A student must submit his/her excused absence request at least one week in advance of the scheduled mandatory class session(s) or examination(s).
Written Exam #1 Make-up date - TBA
Written Exam #2 Make-up date - TBA
Challenges
Following each exam, items which are miskeyed or of questionable validity (based on statistical analysis) may be re-scored or discarded as determined by the course coordinator. There will be, however, no formal challenge system. The intent of this decision is not to be punitive; rather, experience has shown the challenge system to be a nonproductive use of students' and instructor’s time.
Attendance
Lecture Attendance
MSUCOM in accordance with All-University Policy on Attendance (Academic Programs pp. 42 and 43) does not have a regulation requiring class attendance. However, the College understands and supports the need and the right of the faculty to expect student attendance and participation in many curricular components with consequences if the student is not attending.
Laboratory Attendance
Successful completion of Dr. Kumar's on line Laboratory (on Tuesday, January 8, 2008) is MANDATORY (details announced in lecture). For details on make-up experience/assignment, refer to the first paragraph of the MSU-COM Student Services Policy on course requirements at http://www.com.msu.edu/ss/absences.html
Grading
- P = an overall average of > or = to 70% of the total points on the two written examinations and attendance at Non-Neoplastic WBC Disorder Lab.
-
N = an overall average of< 70% of the total points on the two written examinations or lack of attendance or an unexcused absence from the Non-Neoplastic WBC Disorder Lab on January 8, 2008.
Remediation
A student who receives an "N" grade will be required to enroll in OST 590 (Directed Study). Each student who receives an "N" grade will have his/her course performance reviewed by the course faculty who will recommend one of two options:
- Directed study and comprehensive examination or
- Re-enrollment in Hematopoietic System
Student Eligibility for Remediation Examination:
It is the responsibility of a student in the Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine to verify his/her eligibility, with the Office of Student Services, to take a remediation examination/experience prior to the administration of the remediation examination/experience.
In order to be eligible for a remediation examination/experience a student must meet the following three requirements:
- A student must be enrolled and/or reinstated in the College of Osteopathic Medicine.
- A student must have completed and submitted, with appropriate signatures, a Directed Studies Form to the Office of Student Services prior to taking a remediation examination/experience and completed university enrollment for the remediation examination/experience.
- A student must receive, from the Office of Student Services, a form authorizing his/her participation in the remediation examination/experience. This form must be submitted to the instructor of record or his/her designee at the time of the remediation examination/experience. Failure to provide the form to the instructor of record or his/her designee will prohibit the student from taking the remediation examination/experience.
Academic Honesty
Integrity of Scholarship and Grades (All-University Policy and General Student Regulation, pp. 76 and 108, Spartan Life.) If any instance of academic dishonesty (cheating, plagiarism, signing in for another student, or having another student sign you in, etc.) is discovered by an instructor, it is his or her responsibility to take appropriate action. Such action may include giving a failing grade to the student in the course and/or referring the student for judicial review and possible disciplinary action which may include disciplinary suspension from the College.
COM Professionalism Information
Evaluation
Your professional comments, both negative and positive of the course organization, content modes of delivery; evaluation methods and individual instructors are critical to future refinements and improvements in the course and will be used to develop future offerings of OST 521. Completed evaluations will be worth a total of 3 points. These points will be added to the total points the student receives in the course. They will enhance your class standing, however, will not be used to calculate a passing grade for the course. You are requested to complete evaluations by way of the KCC or the KCC Web page not later than Monday, March 10, 2008.
